I feel a bit guilty about not focusing on Sophia’s studies for 2 months now. I have decided to be more involved again. We started with multiplication earlier and to make learning more fun, I invented a game. I will tested her skills and she had to give me an answer within 5 seconds. I fell asleep while waiting for her to memorize the table.
When I woke up, she was playing on her phone. I assumed (incorrectly) that she was done with her table. She wanted to practice singing for her voice class tomorrow. I told her at lunch time that we do Math first then she can sing then play.
She was not ready answering my questions at all! Needless to say, I was disappointed. It was six hours later and we haven’t made any progress. And she told me she wanted to sing! I asked what she did while I was sleeping and she timidly said (after I asked 5 times or so) she played and that she was so sorry.
She looked like she was trying to stop from crying. I told her it does not matter because she cannot turn back time. I taught her the importance of choices and consequences a long time ago and today I had to remind her. When she chose to play instead of study, the consequences were she lost the chance to memorize her multiplication table and practice her song.
How do you teach your eight year old to choose well and face the consequences of her actions responsibly?
